We’ve all heard of the saying “to each his own”, this applies to most things, including body types. Everyone looks different because we come from unique backgrounds, ethnicities, lifestyles. Looking at it from a scientific point of view, we simply have varying gene codes. Society tells us that we should look a certain way, but the fact of the matter is that we are all one-of-a-kind. There isn’t a standard for how people’s appearance should be.
This is the same when it comes to fitness. Because we are all different, there isn’t a streamlined diet or exercise that we should adhere to in order to be called “fit”. Healthy may look different for each of us. It is dependent on different factors like gender, weight and what kind of body type you have.
There are three body types called “Somatypes”. Somatypes are inherited body types based on skeletal frame and body composition. The three main kinds are Ectomorphs, Mesomorphs, and Endomorphs. Ectomorphs have long, lean body types with little body fat and usually have a difficult time gaining weight. Endomorphs have a greater amount of body fat, have denser muscles and gain weight easily. Finally, Mesomorphs are individuals who have a medium frame. They are neither under nor overweight and have more muscle than fat on their bodies.
But why do body types matter, you ask? Knowing your body type will not only help you know more about your body shape, but it will help you build a diet and a workout routine that is catered specifically towards what your body needs. Determining your body type will help you eat, train, and get fit more efficiently.
Body Mass Index
You can try to learn more about your body through other ways aside from knowing your somatype. Body type calculators such as Body Mass Index (BMI) helps determine body types in the sense that it aids in calculating your approximate level of body fat. Calculating your BMI tells you if you’re underweight or overweight and gives you a general idea of how you’re faring in the weight department. However, body type calculators can be inaccurate. One of the main issues with BMI is that it doesn’t differentiate muscle from fat. For example, a person may be athletic and fit. But, they might be considered too overweight according to their BMI because of their muscle mass. Furthermore, knowing your BMI doesn’t really tell you the best way to tackle your health and fitness.
Take A Body Type Quiz
We circle back to our main idea: We all have different body types and so we each have varying fitness and health needs. The best way to find out what you need when it comes to your diet and your exercise is to take a personal body type determination quiz. A body type quiz will help you determine if you’re an Ectomorph, Mesomorph, or Endomorph. From there you can customize your routine according to your individual needs.
