We all want to keep our house neat and tidy, but why not couple it with a bit of DIY?
Here are ten cleaning products you can DIY with the things you’ve already got around the house.
1) Organic lemon cleaner
When life gives you lemons, make an organic lemon cleanser! It is an excellent disinfectant and will be your go-to multipurpose cleaner.
What you will need:
- 10-15 lemons cut into slices
- 500 ml of white vinegar
- 500 ml of water
Instructions:
- Cut the lemons into slices and place them in a glass jar.
- Add the water and vinegar to the container. Stir until the ingredients are homogenous and cover once done.
- Let the mixture sit for 3 to 4 weeks. Transfer to a spray bottle, and it is ready to be used in the kitchen or floors.
2) Ecological detergent
Swap out your store-bought detergent for this home-made and environmentally-friendly soap detergent.
What you will need:
- ½ neutral coconut soap bar
- 2 lemons (juiced)
- 4 tbsps. ammonia
- 6 liters of water
Instructions:
- Cut the coconut soap into cubes and transfer to a saucepan. Under medium heat, add a liter of water and stir until melted.
- Remove from the heat and add 5 liters of cold water, mix in the lemon juice and finally, add the ammonia.
- Mix everything until it is well combined, then you can transfer the mixture to your old or reused detergent bottles.
3) Natural air freshener
Freshen up any room in the house with this lemon, vanilla, and rosemary air freshener.
What you will need:
- 1 liter of water
- 1 lemon
- 1 tsp. vanilla essence
- A sprig of rosemary
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, boil together the water, lemon slices, vanilla, and rosemary.
- Remove from the heat and take out the lemon and rosemary. Once cool, place the liquid in a spray bottle, and your air freshener is now ready to be used!
4) Glass cleaning liquid
Wipe those windows squeaky clean with this trusty and easy-to-make glass cleaning liquid.
What you will need:
- 500 ml of water
- 500 ml of white vinegar
- 3 tbsps. salt
Instructions:
- Mix the water, vinegar, and salt in a spray bottle and shake until the salt has dissolved; once done, it is ready to be used.
5) Grease remover for ovens
Looking for that product that cleans hard to remove grease stains? Look no further. This grease remover is strong enough to clean even the toughest of dirt and grime.
What you will need:
- 200 grams of baking soda
- Water
Instructions:
- Place the baking soda in a container and add water slowly until it forms a thick paste.
- Apply a thick layer on the area you want to clean and let it sit overnight.
- Wipe away the paste and voila! Grease stains begone!
6) Wood polish
Give your wooden furniture some extra shine with this olive oil wood polish.
What you will need:
- 15 ml of olive oil
- 1 lemon (juiced)
- 15 ml of water
Instructions:
- Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Apply onto wooden furniture with a cloth until you get the desired shine
7) Laundry detergent
Laundry Detergent is a home essential. But, it can be expensive and can even have harmful chemicals. This detergent is made of natural ingredients and doesn’t put a dent in your wallet.
What you will need:
- 2 bars of natural soap
- 2 cups of borax
- 2 cups of baking soda
- 9 liters of water
- 15 ml of your favorite essential oil
Instructions:
- First, grate or cut the soap into smaller pieces. Then, add in 1 liter of water and boil until the soap melts.
- Add the borax, bicarbonate, and the remaining 8 liters of water.
- Finally, add in your favorite essential oil, mix well, and place it in a container, so that it is ready for use.
8) Fabric softener
Love that fresh laundry smell but don’t have the time to go out and buy fabric softener? Save yourself the hassle of going to the store and make one in the comforts of your own home.
What you will need:
- 5 Liters of white vinegar
- 30-40 drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil
Instructions:
- Mix the two ingredients in a container and use half a cup for each load of laundry.
9) Floor cleaners
Keep those floors spick and span with this floor cleaner. The best part? It only has 2 ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of vinegar
- 1 gallon of water
Process:
- Add vinegar and water to a container and mix well. Once done, you can now use it to mop your floors.

10) Window cleaner
Worried about foggy and poorly cleaned windows? Fear not! This window cleaner is here to save the day!
Ingredients:
- 1cup of alcohol
- 2 cups of water
- 1 tbsp. of ammonia
Process:
- Be sure to wear gloves while preparing this recipe.
- Mix all the ingredients thoroughly and apply the solution on your windows using a cloth, and don’t forget to use gloves while cleaning!
